Our businesses operate under brands which are well recognised in their own local markets and our customer base includes many of the largest construction companies, developers, shopping malls and industrial corporations.

Through organic growth and our commitment to employees, Hastie Group has attracted some of the best people in the industry, including design engineers, professional project managers, draughtspeople, and a huge team of qualified tradespeople.

History of the Hastie Group

The Hastie Group began trading as a draper’s business in Swansea, UK in the 1800s. Gradually, more services were offered such as insulation contracting, sheet-metal fabrication and air conditioning installation.

In 1970, the Australian subsidiary of Hastie Group was formed in Sydney. The business quickly expanded into Perth and won prestigious contracts such as the Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre, Sydney Futures Exchange, Hyatt Hotel Canberra and Terminal C at Sydney International Airport.

The local business became a wholly-owned Australian company in 1994. In 2001, Hastie expanded into the design & construct market and partnered with RMB, a private equity company. This was then followed by the acquisition of air-conditioning installation & maintenance companies across Australia including Optimus, Trilogy Maintenance Services, Direct Engineering Services, Frigrite Air Conditioning and Palmer Air Conditioning. All these companies were well known in their local markets and provided Hastie with a local presence in multiple markets.

At the same time Hastie expanded into New Zealand after winning the Auckland Hospital contract.

In 2004 Hastie entered the Refrigeration business with the acquisition of a number of refrigeration businesses including Austral Refrigeration, Cowley Refrigeration, QAL Refrigeration and Hastie Refrigeration Service.

In 2005 the group expanded its presence in Melbourne with the acquisition of D&E Air Conditioning. This was then followed by the successful listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in May 2005. Hastie was admitted to the S&P ASX300 in September 2005.

Post listing Hastie established an operation in the United Arab Emirates with the objective of serving clients operating in that region.

In 2006 Hastie established the Electrical Division with the acquisition of the Heyday Group. This positioned the company as a premier provider of electrical services in Sydney with offices in a number of other cities on the east coast. During 2006 we also expanded our marine offshore business with the acquisitions of Gulf Engineering and North Sea Ventilation, extended our maintenance services businesses through the acquisition of EMAC Services in Queensland and moved into industrial refrigeration via the acquisition of Gordon Brothers Industries.

In line with our core building services strategy we expanded into hydraulics (commercial plumbing and drainage) with the acquisition of CDC Plumbing in Melbourne in 2007. During the year we also consolidated our electrical footprint with the acquisition of Watters Electrical in Victoria and South Australia.

In 2008 we continued to strengthen our hydraulics footprint with the acquisition of Beavis and Bartels and GTS Plumbing in Queensland and Nisbet & Durney in New South Wales. Hastie is now the premier hydraulics service provider on the east coast of Australia.

We also significantly extended our presence in the United Kingdom during the year with the acquisition of Rotary. This brought us a business operating throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland and the Middle East. Rotary provides essential mechanical and electrical services to the building industry in exactly the same way that Hastie does so in Australia.

In 2009 Hastie was admitted to the S&P ASX200 list of companies.

The Hastie Group is a proud member of The Green Building Council Australia.
